It it operates as described. It is easy to set up.
But, I made a small improvement/modification by placing a 90-degree angle piece of plastic cut from a food container box, measured and fitted to snuggle in on the bottom of the cage precisely behind the bait platform / release pedal and extend about 3/4 of an inch up the back of the mesh wall… this way the animal has no choice but to step on the pedal to access the treats, it keeps the treats from falling through the mesh floor, and ensures that there is some food in the cage to last until you come to check on the trap ( I leave it set overnight for rats and check it in the morning) . I have added photos but since the plastic is transparent it might be a little hard to see.
I’m currently using this small size trap to catch and release rats ( who are attracted to my bird and squirrel feeders and water, and have taken up residence in the space between my roof and kitchen ceiling!), but it would also work for mice.
I would not suggest this one for any animals as large as a squirrel, it’s way too small for that. (It’s almost too small for an adult rat with the length of the tail included.)
ONE COMPLAINT: it needs to have some kind of a handle on the top otherwise you have to put your hand all the way around it to carry it/move it with the captured rat inside. The rats cannot bite you from the inside and I’m not worried about them doing that at all, as they are going to be afraid of you and stay away rather than try to attack you, but it’s just a little something to be aware of that you will need to handle the sides and bottom of the cage directly.
Also, not a complaint but maybe a suggestion, I would have liked that it have another little access door or panel on the side of the cage somewhere. Since rats are not active during the day, I check the trap in the morning, and if I have a captive, I keep him/her in the cage with food and water, until dusk before I take them out to release; another access door one one side, perhaps one that slides up to open, would facilitate someone in adding and maintaining the food and water more easily all day.
This works very well to catch field mice even if they are very little. No escapees so far between the trap and a peanut butter cracker. You can easily release them in an area away from your home. We dump out the remaining cracker, too. : )..
Bought this because I was being overrun by chipmunks, destroying my potted plants, and patio. It worked great!!
Squirrels would also get in, and I found it wasn’t strong enough to hold them. They were able to flip the trap over and get the door to release, So for anything bigger than chipmunks I would recommend a stronger trap.

The media could not be loaded. Have had a mouse problem for too long. Saw the mouse droppings on the window sill and heard them scurrying around up in my attic but wasn’t sure if it was mice or bats or squirrels or what! After a month, I said enough is enough, im taking care of this, and no way was I paying an exterminator! $20 for a humane trap that works! I’ll take it. I heard the cage bang shut and new immediately the deed was done. Sorry Mickey.
Only thing I didn’t like was the manufacturer sticker on the bait plate.. why?? I has to tediously scratch and peel it off carefully because I was worried it might bend the metal components of the trap action. Just put no sticker..
I’m sure it would work for much larger rodents as well.
Bye Mickey!
Lately I’ve had an explosion of the chipmunk population around my house, probably due to all the birdseed I put out around my feeders. I’ve done too good a job of keeping the neighborhood cats away. It follows then that some of the more crafty chipmunks have entered my garage when the door is up and I’m not nearby. They’ve learned that’s where the food bonanza is stored and they’ve made the most of it, chewing holes in the 50 lb. plastic bags and spilling seed all over. There’s no way I can catch them or shoo them out. Too many hiding places. So, I decided to buy a trap. Since I first set it up about four days ago, I’ve caught six chipmunks and two mice! It’s great! And easy to set up. I thought my scent might scare the invaders away, but it hasn’t bothered them.
I just returned from transporting the latest catch to a huge nearby park meadow three miles away. It’s full of weeds and wildflowers. Once the creatures are released from the cage, they burst out and start to run and hide, but some even seem to slow down and realize that maybe this is a better place! This has worked so well for me that I’m considering buying a backup trap. Maybe I’ll even put it outside to lower the chipmunk population…
Very happy with this little trap. It worked like charm and caught mousey in double quick time, and we were then able to take somewhere far away and release him into the wild.
I used it to trap a rat living under our deck. First night I put a trail of nuts to the back of the cage without setting the trap. The next morning all the nuts were gone. Second night I repeated the trail of nuts but set the trap. Next morning the rat was securely trapped.
So easy to set. Thus far the most I’ve caught and relocated is 7 chipmunks in the same day (one at a time). Recommend releasing at least 5 miles, preferably 10 miles away to keep them from returning. I’ve caught a couple mice too. Peanuts worked great to entice them, but cashews were a real favorite. Would definitely buy this again. Might even buy extras so I can set one while releasing one.
Managed to trap 7 squirrels. The larger squirrel managed to loosen the trip mechanism. After some fenagling fixed the trap for further action. Trap performed supper with the younger animals but the trap should be bigger for the larger animals.
Doesn’t take into account the fact that they have long tails. So if the door shuts on his tail how hard would it be for it to get out, and if it can’t but it’s tail is caught that’s not very humane since it would probably kill itself trying to get its tail out of there. I had to return because it seemed like a large rat would only be partially inside when tripping the trap door.
Had this for three days to catch and relocate some chipmunks. Got 1 chipmunk, 3 field mice, and 1 gray squirrel. Very easy to use, pretty easy to clean. The big ole squirrel bent some of the wire mesh, but looks like it’s OK.
